NOW STOP RIGHT THERE!
… and let me tell you about this scene!
Because I’ve seen so much meta (and hate) already about how Hannibal does what he does to alienate Will further from anyone else (and how much of a bastard he is for that), and I agree (and ask you what you expected), but I’ve seen nothing on this yet …
“It is 7:27 pm, you are in Baltimore, Maryland, and your name is Will Graham—”
“—NO, I don’t care who I am! Just tell me … If he’s real …”
But THIS, this is not only heart wrenching, but it’s also two much more important things concerning Will’s development in the show:
FIRST
This is Will trusting Hannibal 100% and beyond that, this is Will accepting and embracing Hannibal as his gauge. Even after Jack told him that if he ever doubts himself he should go straight to Jack Will still seeks out Hannibal first, willingly making him his kind of safe haven. He says “I don’t care who I am!”, because he knows he can’t trust his own judgment , instead he looks at Hannibal, the only thing/person he accepts/knows to be real and asks “Just tell me If he’s real” trusting Hannibal’s judgement of reality. That’s also why he breaks down when Hannibal tells him “I don’t see anyone”, because he trust him so so much and If Hannibal tells him he is hallucinating then it has to be true, right? In fact he trusts Hannibal so much that even his hallucination changes, that he stops seeing anyone just because Hannibal told him so. So Will cries “Please don’t lie to me” , because Will knows/believes that what Hannibal is telling him must be the truth, a truth he now has to accept. (He says please don’t because Hannibal has become the only person he can accept such truth from)
And that’s the SECOND
Up until now, even after the MRI and Sutcliffe telling him there is nothing wrong, Will doesn’t (openly) accept the possibility of a Mental Disease - “I know what kind of crazy I am.”- he says and he sticks to that opinion, goes in for more test, keeps on working. But in that scene right here, with asking out loud
“What’s happening to me?”
he acknowledges for the first time that there is something wrong with him that it might really be all in his head … that he might be going crazy for real, that it’s a truth and not a feeling. (Hannibal tells him so, so it has to be true, right?)
“How is this experience going to shape Will?”, Hannibal tells Jack, and though It also applies to shooting Gideon, I think the real meaning behind this is “How is experiencing/knowing what it’s like to be crazy going to change Will?” Even if they’ll eventually cure him of his encephalitis there will always be the fact that Will, even if just for a little while, lost himself (and went to Hannibal to get himself back), that he became what he feared most. (“I fear not knowing who I am.”)
This scene, this very few parts of conversation, are so fucking important for who Will is going to become, because we know that the person he trust the most at this moment, who is his anchor, the only thing he accepts to be real, is going to be ripped from him, Will is going to loose this one last stability in his life and he is going to loose it finding out that everything he believed was a lie, a manipulation, and from that moment on he will never ever truly be able to trust himself anymore.

Check out the contrast between these search results. Not a single “loser”, “easy”, “desperate”, “stupid”, “scum” or similar insult in the search results for fathers.
Why, society, are single fathers so often seen with sympathy and admiration, yet single mothers are painted as a washed-up, disgusting strain on the system?
We need feminism because of realities like this.
This makes me sad. Another reminder of the misogynist society we live in.
